Scar Care

What is the cesarean Scar Care treatment for?

After a cesarean birth, you might experience a variety of complaints. For example:

  • numbness

  • itchy, burning or pulling sensation at the scar

  • pain when wearing a jeans

  • lumpy scar

  • pain in back, neck or legs

  • pain when moving

  • less connection with core

  • restricted freedom of movement

  • pain in pubic bone when standing up

  • red scar

  • 'pouch' above scar

The scar care treatment can help reduce or even resolve these complaints.

When is treatment possible?

Scar Care treatment is possible starting six weeks following the cesarean birth. There is not really an end-date applicable, up to when a treatment can be given. Still nice results can be achieved, even if your cesarean birth took place long time ago. And with that I mean many years ago. The effectiveness of the treatment might be somewhat reduced, but it's not uncommon to see positive results of a treatment, even if the birth was for example 10 years ago.

It is not possible to give you a scar care treatment if your scar is infected, the wound is open, or there is still a scab on the scar. Some of the methods I use are not suitable when you are pregnant.

Methods

There are different methods that I use to optimize the healing of a cesarean scar. The choice of the method depends on the type of scar and the complaints you experience. This will be assessed at the start of the treatment. Often a combination of methods can be applied.

At a first treatment I will do an intake with you. Each treatment I start with having a look at the scar and investigate the scar through touch with my fingers. Then I will propose a treatment method.

Taping

Medical taping is used on scars to soften scars and reduce pain. The tape is placed in a grid over the scar so that it is 'lifted' from the skin and massaged continuously.

Cupping

A method originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine. For this treatment I use silicone cups that are placed on the skin to create suction. This improves circulation and clears accumulated toxins from deeper parts of the body. Cupping is possible starting 3 months after the cesarean birth.

Moxa or Moxibustion

Also a method originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine. This method uses a mugwort stick and heat which establishes a good blood circulation and stimulates the lymphatic system.

Massage

This ensures good blood circulation, which increases the supply of oxygen and promotes nutrients to the healing tissues, accelerating recovery.

None of these methods is supposed to be invasive or painful. I will constantly check with you how you are doing and what you are feeling, to make sure that the treatment feels okay for your.

Results

The aim of the treatment(s) is that the complaints, such as pain, restricted freedom of movement, numbness and adhesions decrease. The amount of treatments depends on your individual scar and your own preferences. Many women already experience some improvement after a single treatment! Generally 2 to 4 treatments give a satisfying result. If you have had a couple of treatments, and you feel you would like to continue on a longer term, I can also teach you some of the techniques to enable you to continue treatment yourself at home.

It feels really good! I feel a big difference, a softer, smoother feeling. It feels like I have more contact deeper in the layers. It looks smoother compared to, for example, where I thought there was a 'dip' on the right side. Also, on the right side, it has become very light in color now!
